Senior figures in the Austrian armed forces have told Defence Minister Norbert Darabos that the country's army is "dying" due to underfunding, Jane's has learned.rnIn early April Vienna's military leadership, including the Chief of the General Staff, General Edmund Entacher, and his deputy, Lieutenant General Othmar Commenda, signed a letter to the minister complaining about the budget, which again looks set to reach only EUR2.2 billion (USD2.9 billion) or 0.7 per cent of GNP - the lowest in Europe by this measurement. The letter points to repeated announcements that investment would increase to at least 1 per cent of GNP. An additional EUR200-300 million of annual funding is necessary just to meet requirements, the military leaders argue.
