A US specialist on export controls has told Jane sthat the US International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) should not be daunting to members of the defence sector outside the United States. "I would like people to understand what ITAR is and how it's not something to be scared of," said Gregory Suchan, a senior associate at US company Commonwealth Consulting Corporation and a former deputy assistant secretary of state, who was responsible for the Directorate of Defense Trade Controls from 2003 to 2007. Speaking to Jane'son 19 August, ahead of the upcoming conference 'Focusing on the ITAR - US Export Controls on Non-US Transactions' in Amsterdam on 25-26 September, Suchan said: "If our closest allies want to build ITAR-f ree weapons, it's an overreaction [to the ITAR].... Export regulations are supposed to be a speed bump and we've been controlling [defence-related] exports since 1935."
