Germany's security situation has changed markedly over the last two decades, which have seen the creation of an eastern buffer as a result of two waves of NATO enlargement The German Ministry of Defence first broke with its traditional post-Second World War policy of territorial defence in 1996 when it deployed troops as part of the NATO Stabilisation Force (SFOR) in Bosnia. The 9/11 attacks against the US dramatically accelerated the foreign engagements of the German Armed Forces (Bundeswehr), whose members are now operating all the way to the Hindu Kush.
