The US defence industry is beginning to see the effects of President George Bush's higher defence spending, although weakness in non-defence aspects of their businesses have pulled down company's earnings. The recent spate of first-half-year earnings reports have shown that sales have climbed for nearly all major US defence companies while profits have fallen. "I think this shows that the government has been spending money hand over fist," Eric Hugel, an aerospace and defence analyst with Stephens said of the earnings reports. "We are seeing the effect of rising spending for defence."
