The elimination of Iraq as a military power has not significantly diminished the regional ballistic missile threat to Israel because Iran, Syria and even Libya remain potential risks, says Arieh Herzog, Director, Israel Missile Defense Organization (IMDO). "In terms of our strategic policy, Iraq was a major threat because they demonstrated that they were willing to launch ballistic missiles against Israel. However, from the point of view of quantity (tens of missiles) and type of missiles (which were of low quality and poor accuracy and easy to intercept), they presented a less significant menace. "The major threats to us now are quantity and increased sophistication in terms of range and warhead, and we must ensure that our defences are broad enough to address this," Herzog says.
