Germany's support for the US ' war on terrorism' campaign raised hopes among industry officials and Bun-deswehr (armed forces) personnel that Berlin might substantially increase the country's defence budget, particularly in research and development (R&D) and procurement. However, the cabinet only allocated an additional EUR767 million ($755 million) in 2002 to fund operations and equipment for the fight against terrorism. Unlike the country's aerospace and naval industries, the land defence industry is in the most critical state. Most of the large army programmes are nearly complete and new orders have been slow to materialise. Money has been allocated to the giant air and naval programmes such as the Eurofighter Typhoon fighter aircraft, Tiger attack helicopter, NH 90 transport helicopter, A400M transport aircraft, K 130 corvette, F 124 frigate and U 212 submarine.
