摘要

The US Department of Defense (DoD) has revealed that the international military presence in Southeast Asia and surrounding region in support of Operation 'Enduring Freedom' and the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) has grown to 17,000 troops from 17 countries. About 6,000 of those personnel are in Afghanistan and they outnumber US forces on the ground there by nearly 1,000. While Australia, Canada, Denmark and Norway had previously disclosed deployments of special operations forces (SOF) to Afghanistan, the US govern-ment has only recently publicly acknowledged the specific contributions of its allies (Jane's Defence Weekly 13 February). These included the participation of those countries as well as France and Germany in the largest joint ground operation of the campaign to date, an assault launched on 1 March against a Taliban and Al-Qaeda stronghold south of the town of Gardez. The force comprised about 2,000 troops, 200 of them SOF personnel from European coalition members.
