The Bundeswehr continued to suffer from equipment shortages as increasing commitments put pressure on its personnel in 2018, a German parliamentary report has found. In his annual report presented to the Bundestag, the German parliament, on 29 January, Germany's parliamentary commissioner for the armed forces, Hans-Peter Bartels, identifies 21,500 vacant posts in the Bundeswehr. With 173,000 troops at the end of 2018, 4,000 more than a year before, Bartels wrote that the German government's plans to increase the number of troops to 203,000 by 2024, 5,000 more than previously planned, increases pressure on recruiters.
