South Korea's Defense Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA) has started the official bidding process for the basic design of the Republic of Korea Navy's (RoKN's) next-generation destroyer. In a 29 May announcement DAPA said interested parties must table their bids by 20 July, after which the selection process, which is set to be completed this year, will take place under the Korea Destroyer Next Generation (KDDX) programme. The selected tenderer will be tasked with developing the warship's basic design, which must be completed by the second half of 2023, said DAPA, adding that the detailed design and subsequent construction of the vessel will be carried out from 2024. DAPA said the ship, which will feature the latest locally developed shipbuilding and weapon technologies, is expected to be fitted with modern automation and electric propulsion systems.
