Chinese J-15 multirole fighter aircraft have carried out night-time 'buddy' aerial refuelling exercises, demonstrating the People's Liberation Army Navy's (PLAN'S) ability to operate the platforms around the clock. The PLAN, which released a video of the manoeuvres on 27 July, said in a statement posted on its Weibo account that such training exercises improve the operational capabilities of its J-15 carrier-borne fleet. That said, the aircraft shown in the video took off from an air base and not from a carrier. No further details were provided by the PLAN, but the state-owned Global Times newspaper reported on 28 July that the move marked the first time PLAN J-15s had conducted 'buddy' aerial refuelling at night.
