Indonesia has so far failed in its effort to reduce the cost of its involvement in the development of the Korean Fighter experimental (KF-X) multirole fighter aircraft, a spokesperson from the Indonesian Ministry of Defence (MoD) in Jakarta has confirmed. In comments to reporters on 8 September, the spokesperson said that Indonesia is looking to renegotiate with South Korea its costs in the KF-X development programme down from 20% to 15%. However, he said, a reduction to only 18.8% has so far been achieved. Under the original KF-X finance agreement - signed in 2016 - Indonesia is committed to pay for 20% of the total development costs of the aircraft, which are estimated at about USD8 billion. The South Korean government is committed to pay for 60% of costs, with prime contractor Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI) covering the remaining 20%.
