The Royal Australian Navy (RAN) decommissioned its second Armi-dale-class patrol boat on 26 March. HMAS Pine (Ⅱ) (with pennant number P 87) was retired in a ceremony held at naval base HMAS Coonawarra in Darwin after almost 15 years of service, according to an entry on the RAN's website. Pirie was the fifth vessel of the 14-strong class to be inducted, with the final boat entering service in February 2008. The first boat of the class to be decommissioned was HMAS Bunda-berg, which was destroyed in a major fire in August 2014. The RAN's 300-tonne, 56.8 m-long Armidale-class patrol boats, the first of which entered service in 2005, are to be gradually replaced by six new 'evolved' Cape-class patrol boats ordered in May 2020 and 12 Arafura-class offshore patrol vessels, the first of which is scheduled to enter service in 2022.
