The Korea Research Institute for Defense Technology Planning and Advancement (KRIT) launched earlier this year to support the development of South Koreas defence technology industrial base (DTIB).KRITs president, Young-il Lim, told Janes that the institute was established to support two new sets of South Korean legislation to spur domestic capability in the country's defence science and technology (S&T) and defence production. These laws - the Act on Defence Industry Development and Support and the Defence Science and Technology Innovation Promotion Act - were officially enacted in February and April respectively."In the era of 4IR [the 4th Industrial Revolution], the strategies of warfare and the weapon systems that militaries deploy will change dramatically," said Lim. "To take action towards these new strategies and technologies the government has enacted these two laws and launched KRIT."The laws will enable South Koreas defence-industrial base to expand its shares in domestic and international defence markets and boost the country's ability to develop and operational-ise advanced military capabilities related to 4IR technologies, such as artificial intelligence and autonomous systems.
