The Royal Marines, the amphibious arm of the UK Royal Navy, are undergoing a period of great change to make the force more relevant to modern warfare. In the 2018 report 'Sunset for the Royal Marines? the Royal Marines and UK amphibious capability', published by the House of Commons Defence Committee, the perilous position of the United Kingdom's amphibious capability was laid out. The report pointed to the contrary position the UK was taking in divesting its amphibious capability at a time when its peers - allies and adversaries alike - were increasing their investments in this area. Since the publication ol this report there has been a locus in UK government publications, including the Integrated Review and the Royal Navy Strategic Plan, on the new Future Commando Force (FCF) concept: a development programme that is touted to overhaul the Royal Marines' operations and develop a "more agile and lethal capability" lor the UK. According to the RN, another tenet of the FCF is about "returning commando forces to their roots". Although the Royal Marines were founded in 1664, the Commando aspect ol their ethos was only developed during the Second World War lor raids on Nazi-occupied Europe.
