Advanced tactical-level unmanned aircraft systems (UASs) can squeeze the mission space held by their larger counterparts, according to Insitu's Mark Russell. At IDEX 2015, Russell told IHS Jane's that improvements in payload and engine technology are the main drivers behind the ability for tactical systems such as Insitu's Integrator to take on more advanced roles, adding that there is a "sweet spot" where the capabilities of advanced tactical systems cross over with those of Tier 3 aircraft. "You can get 80% of the capability for less than 10% of the cost," said Russell. Tactical systems typically have a much smaller operating footprint, both in terms of infrastructure and manning, he added.
