The US Navy is targeting the broader application of magnetic anomaly detection (MAD) systems through a number of Small Business Innovative Research (SBIR) programmes, emphasising the use of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). According to US Department of Defense SBIR pre-release information published in mid-November, the navy is sponsoring efforts aimed at the development of a low size, weight and power (SWaP) scalar magnetometer, an expendable UAV for antisubmarine warfare (ASW), and analysis techniques for predicting the ASW performance of UAVs equipped with MAD systems.
