An ageing frigate force, delays to replacement programmes, and uncertainty over future shipbuilding plans collectively threaten the UK Royal Navy's (RN's) ability to maintain surface fleet numbers beyond 2023, a committee of Members of Parliament (MPs) has warned. The committee's conclusions are in stark contrast to plans laid out in the government's 2015 Strategic Defence and Security Review (SDSR15) to sustain and, in the longer term, increase frigate numbers.
