Over the past two decades, the Royal Netherlands Navy (RNLN) has been undergoing a process of transformation, reorienting itself towards expeditionary operations and maritime tasks at the lower end of the operational spectrum while maintaining its traditional role in support of NATO's anti-submarine and mine warfare tasks. This reorientation has necessitated an increase in requirement for assets specifically designed to deal with operations in the complex coastal environment.
