The US Navy (USN) is one step closer to improving its ability to interdict and destroy ballistic missile threats, US Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA) officials told IHS Jane's on 6 June. The USN has announced plans to procure nine Arleigh Burke-class destroyers (DDG-51) in a USD6.1 billion multi-year procurement (MYP), which will include three Flight Ⅲ variants of the guided-missile ships. Flight Ⅲ - the latest iteration of the DDG-51 class - will be the first USN ships built from the keel up for ballistic missile defence (BMD), Captain Mark Vandroff, DDG-S1 shipbuilding programme manager, said in an interview at NAVSEA.
