Studying building defects has exercised building professionals, contractors, academics and researchers for many decades. The first analysis of 500 defects from all building types as recorded by the Building Research Establishment Advisory Service was published as BRE Digest 176 in 1975. The investigations were carried out by a small team of specialists, working to common agreed criteria, so some confidence could be placed in the consistency of the results. Directly related to housing were studies of defects published in 1982 with three volumes under the general title 'Quality in Traditional Housing'. Here the survey covered some 1,200 dwellings built of masonry cavity construction and not more than four stories in height. Determined for this exercise as faults, defined as a departure from acknowledged good practice, nearly 1,000 different types of faults were recorded over the survey as a whole.
