Reading the book, I could not stop thinking how Gaidar's untimely death is particularly costly for Russia today. Even those among the ruling elite who did not like him, listened and, albeit reluctantly, often followed his advice. Gaidar was brutally honest and expressed his opinions regardless of personal costs. He was also listened to because many of his predictions came true. Russia now is at the crossroads or, as many would argue, at the point of no return. The impetus of the reforms of Gaidar is exhausted. Russia, like the late Soviet Union, reaped the low hanging fruits of building market institutions and of simple economic reforms. The time of easy growth fueled by a low starting point and by high oil prices is in the past.
