I was a squadron leader in the Royal Air Force (RAF) in 1982, manning the chaff and flare desk at the RAF Central Trials and Tactics Organization (CTTO) at RAF High Wycombe, UK. In April, I was in the US visiting my friend, Lt Col Jim Beaty, who headed the EW cell of the USAF Tactical Air Force HQ at Langley, VA, and who worked with me on the NATO group overseeing the Mace series of chaff trials. On our way to my flight home, Jim told me that the Argentineans had invaded the Falkland Islands. I only vaguely knew where the Falklands were and was unsure why they had been invaded.
