As conventional technologies for reducing internal combustion engines emissions are reaching their limits, one way of reducing pollution levels is using biofuels like isobutanol. This four-carbon atoms alcohol has a higher octane rating than n-butanol, making it a more suitable substitute for gasoline. Spark ignition engines can be fueled with pure isobutanol or different gasoline-isobutanol blends. This experimental study presents the performance and emissions of a port injection spark ignition engine, not modified in any way to make it more suitable for the use of alcohol as a fuel. Full load operation as well as partial load at constant engine speed are investigated. A drop in power at full load is observed as the alcohol content increases in the gasoline-isobutanol fuel blend. For low isobutanol concentrations, up to 30%, the pollution level of the power train at partial load is within the same limits obtained when fueling the engine with gasoline alone. For high isobutanol content in the fuel blend, nitrous oxides emissions increase significantly, due to a slightly lean mixture.
