Relation of maternal personality to perceptions of environmental chaos in the home

Are associations between objectively measured and perceived home chaos moderated by individual differences in stimulus sensitivity or extraversion? 94 mothers completed the Highly Sensitive Person Scale, the Noise Sensitivity Scale and the International Personality Item Pool gregariousness and excitement seeking subscales. Maternal perception of home chaos was assessed using the CHAOS scale. Two observations were used to code home noise, crowding, "traffic pattern" and disorganization. Significant interactions were identified, such that associations between higher home traffic patterns or disorganization and maternal perceptions of home chaos were significant only for mothers high in stimulus sensitivity. Individual perceptions of the level of home chaos are a joint function of both the objective stimulus situation and individual differences in sensitivity to the environment.
