Aggregation Behavior of Benzoxazole Cyanine Dyes

The aggregation behavior of the benzoxazole cyanine dye 5-phenyl-3-sulfobutyl-2-{1-[2-ethyl- 3-(5-phenyl-3-sulfobutyl-2-ben-zoxazolediyl)-propenyl]}benzoxazole (GS11), in Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) monolayers and multilayers and in solution has been investigated by UV-visible absorption spectroscopy. The J-aggregates were prepared by two methods. One comprises cospreading the cyanine dye with arachidic acid on a water surface and compressing the layer (spreading method). The other method comprises adsorbing the cyanine dye molecules onto an arachidic acid monolayer from a subphase composed of the dye solution (adsorption method). LB films prepared by both methods showed the characteristic J-band of GS11 at λ = 550 nm, whereas the absorption spectrum of the spreading solution did not. Decreasing intensities and shifts of the J-band toward lower wavelengths were observed in mixtures of methanol/water as the methanol content increased from 0 to 30%. This finding points to a shift of the aggregate equilibrium toward the monomeric form of the dye with decreasing water concentration. Between 30 and 40% methanol content J-bands appeared only when an electrolyte (KCl) was added, and no J-band was observed when the methanol content was below 40%, not even when the solution was saturated with KCl.
