摘要

Long though this memoir may be, it is a page-turner not least because its title raises so many questions and evokes so many recent debates. Recalling what some dubbed the 'revolt of the generals' in early 2006, it is natural to wonder what motivated Gates to publish this book when one of the two presidents he served as Secretary of Defense is still in office. Was there something urgent that needed telling now rather than after inauguration in late January 2017? If not, did Gates not consider whether holding one's tongue could be a duty? Anyone who followed the news during the secretary's tenure and remembers how sphinx-like Gates could be will not require a spoiler alert before the next sentence. In fact, Gates never directly nor completely answers those obvious questions. We have the book now, even before midterm elections. But we do not know with any certainty why we have it now.
