摘要

Nigel Biggar's In Defence of War is, in my judgment, the best contemporary theological exploration of the ethics of war since the work of Paul Ramsey. A good deal of attention has already been directed at this book, including a collection of essays in the American interdisciplinary journal Soundings 97.2 (2014) and a conference at Oxford, papers from which are being published in the British journal Studies in Christian Ethics. The presenters at the Oxford conference included individuals with backgrounds in military service and in military policy, and one of these in particular questioned the value of such a book as this, which proceeds from a specifically Christian moral framework, for military ethics as a practice. This is a question others may pose as well, and in this review I will argue that In Defence of War does indeed have important value for military ethics, while also offering some concerns of my own about the need for a more conscious effort on Biggar's part to build a bridge between the kind of moral reasoning he offers, based in a specifically Christian theological conception of just war, and the more broadly secular arenas of military ethics and military policy.
