摘要

The Commonwealth of Kentucky, known as the Horse Capital of the World, is home to storied horse farms, Thoroughbred and Standardbred race tracks, the Kentucky Horse Park, and a great number of horses. Each year, many of these animals will meet the end of their life, and some may pose a potential environmental risk through contamination with disease or drugs. Death is a sensitive topic and one that people do not wish to confront unless absolutely necessary. However, compliance with current law is mandatory, and more sustainable disposition practices should be encouraged in the interest of protecting wildlife and the environment. This paper utilized a qualitative study to assess the current awareness of individuals involved in the equine industry regarding topics related to the disposition of equine carcasses. The study concluded that there are three dimensions underlying the decision-making related to this topic: emotional attachment, awareness, and the role of expertise.
