Brief: In-Situ Polymerization of an Inflatable Sleeve To Reline Damaged Tubing and Shut Off Perforations

Finding an effective solution to seal off perforations to reduce gas flow, to reduce water cut, or to modify injection profiles has long been a subject of concern. Several solutions for through-tubing shut off have been tried with a varying level of success. This paper describes the operating principles, development, and field trials of a. new technology designed to set a composite sleeve downhole for shutting off perforations or repairing tubing. Manufactured with fibers, elastomers, and thermosetting resins and run in on electric wireline, the sleeve is inflated with well fluid to seal against the inside of the casing. After heating to harden the resins, the running equipment is extracted, leaving a pressure-resistant inner lining in place.
