The reaction of dicarboxylic acid potassium salts with 1,4-dibromobutane in 1-methyl-2-pyrrolidone at moderate temperature, for reaction of polycondensation, was applied to the synthesis of high-molecular-weight copolyesters poly(tetramethylene maleate-co-tetramethylene isophthalate), (PBIM) and poly(tetramethylene fumarate-co-tetramethylene isophthalate), (PBFI). Two series of random unsaturated copolyesters with different degrees of unsaturation, cis or trans configurations, were prepared. The composition of the ester residues of the isolated copolymers was different from the composition of the initial mixtures of the salts, especially in the series of copolyesters based on isophthalic and fumaric acid. This result suggests that the isophthalic acid salt is the most reactive in the reaction of polycondensation, while the fumaric acid salt is least reactive. Some physico-chemical properties of the prepared copolyesters are discussed. In each series of copolyesters the glass transition temperature varies slightly with composition. The copolyesters with a higher content of cis units are highly viscous liquids at ambient temperature and their corresponding trans polymers are partly crystalline polymers which manifest fiber-forming properties.
