I jumped at the chance to review this book as the title seemed so of the moment and relevant to my interests in the archiving and management of sensitive information. As you will see below, my eager anticipation was well rewarded. Only very rarely does a book come along that has an immediate and enduring impact that changes my understanding of my professional domain. These rare books do not simply add some new facts to one's knowledge base but re-frame a whole area of professional thought and perception. For me this book has already joined this group. This book is not aimed exclusively at archivists (its focus is the memory studies and legal communities) but I think that, almost perversely, this is the very reason archivists should read it! All professions have a tendency to regard their own perspective as of prime importance and archivists are no different. This book, coming from the memory studies domain, together with its legal and human rights perspective, challenges archivist readers to re-examine their own perspectives.
