Control over the modification of wool by a proteolytic enzyme was found to depend on the choice of buffer and its ionic strength, as well as on the previous processing history of the wool and the pH profile of the wool and the pH profile of the protease. In particular, the activity towards wool of a non-specific endoprotease (Novozym 655L) was shown to be much greater in sodium tetraborate buffer than in ammonium sulphate buffer at the same pH and ionic strength.
