Seven gold awards were handed out to seven different Kentucky wineries at the 5th Annual Kentucky Derby Festival Wine Competition this year at Louisville's Brown Hotel. This year's competition included wine varietals from 18 Kentucky and Indiana wineries. The wines were judged as one of several different categories: White or Red Native American, Hybrid or Vinifera, Non-Grape or Dessert wine. The judging panel was composed of 18 experts from the American Wine Society. They will sore the wines based on appearance, bouquet, taste/texture, aftertaste and overall impression. Since the wines are judged on a points scale it is possible to have multiple gold, silver and bronze winners in a given category.
