This paper describes some nondestructive testing techniques to detect potential causes of structural failure of aging aircraft, such as cracks and corrosion. The techniques include ultrasonics, both with contact transducers and in a non-contact modality using laser-based ultrasonics. A system for detection of corrosion in the layered structure of the DC-9 wingbox, based on the use of contact transducers on the wing skin surface, is highlighted. X-ray backscattering depth profilometry to assess second-layer corrosion in fuselage structures is discussed in some detail. The propagation of fatigue cracks emanating from rivet holes has been studied, and results on crack initiation and propagation are presented. Acoustic microscopy has been used to image surface breaking and subsurface cracks near rivet holes.
