Research has looked into reducing the amount of bitumen used in chip seal road surfaces, by applying the bitumen binder as an emulsion, rather than as hot cutback bitumen. The project found statistically significant differences in how cohesive the different bitumen binders tested were, although the report authors caution that, in practice, the overall strength of a chip seal surface depends on many more factors than the cohesiveness of the bitumen film.
