Launched in September 2013, LibraryReads, as its website affirms, aims to present "the top ten books published [each] month that librarians across the country love." These aren't necessarily best sellers or critical darlings but "the kinds of books library staff were chatting with patrons about in their libraries and communities," affirms Steering Committee member Stephanie Chase, Hillsboro PL, Portland, OR. Each month since then, LJ has listed the top ten picks and an interview with the No. 1 author. But for December 2014, the LibraryReads Steering Committee decided to do something a little different. "We really wanted to celebrate our first year with a bang and have a chance to take stock of what we have done," explains Chase. "We also wanted to have a way that library staff who can't or who struggle to read prepublication could participate." Thus, the committee proposed a "favorite-ot-the favorites" list that would revisit all the lists thus far and discover what really shone. Thousands voted, including folks who had never nominated a title before. The hope, of course, is that these folks will continue voting in the new year, adding to what Chase sees as "a steady increase" in participants, as evidenced by all the new library staff and libraries she encounters with each new nomination.
