Funny thing, memory. I had written: It was not until we got to Vilanova and saw the 20 + locomotives lined up in the old roundhouse that I realised that we had stumbled virtually unaware on one of the most impressive locomotive museums in the world. As soon as I saw them I was reminded forcibly of my last visit to Spain, back in 1971. And yet despite writing at the time about: magic memories that can never fade, I had in fact forgotten a great deal about those visits. The following continues the extract just referred to: the enthusiastic driver of the 2-8-2 on the afternoon train to Hendaye from Miranda de Ebro who started away from the station by throwing the regulator hard over, slipping the engine and producing a spectacle of smoke and fireworks that has no place in any manual of enginemanship, all for me and unasked. I was then approached by a diffident member of the Guardia Civil whose salute preceded an enquiry as to whether I had permission to photograph trains from the station.
