摘要

A parallel trend exists between maritime transport and geography given the multifariousness of both. Hence, both geography and maritime transport face the paradox of being manifold and oneness at the same time. Luhmann [1] broaches this challenge of oneness and multifariousness in his definition of complexity. Indeed, maritime transport is the materialization of human interactions in a world of globalization. However, beyond being a tool bridging different regions, it is both a direct and indirect driver of economic development with possibilities to consolidate, induce and interpose. As a consequence, the performance of maritime transport as a derived demand through its organization, strategies and functioning has facilitated and potentially driven space-time compression [2]. The atrophy of space and time is directly related to technical innovations [3]. The standardization of shipments with the introduction of the container has been a key innovation in this process.
