We study free boundary problems for an unknown scalar function and its level surfaces. Questions of uniqueness, monotonicity, spatial localization and existence of solutions are discussed. A survey of constructive methods of solution of particular problems and of mathematical forecasting In relevant areas of natural sciences is presented.
