Are prophets saints? There is a long tradition from the ancient Near East that attributes prophetic powers to individuals arbitrarily, irrespective of the recipient's merit. Every ancient society had its magicians and seers, often close to the center of political authority. With regard to the literary genre of saints' lives, what is the function of prophecy? Specifically, how did the earliest biographers of Francis of Assisi, the best known of all prophet-saints, depict him as a prophet? While modern historians often apply virtually every kind of prophecy to the Poverello, from prophecy of the environment to prophet of world peace, the earliest written sources reveal more restrictive meanings.
