After many years of minimal investment in military space research due to the high costs involved, the UK Government's Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (Dstl) initiated a competition in 2012 to develop a radio frequency (RF) nanosatellite (nanosat) payload to prove that affordable space research was possible, and which capitalised on the emergence of low cost nanosat technology. This programme, won by Roke as Prime, and supported by Scisys and SSTL, successfully developed flight-ready payload modules, which we expect to be launched into Low Earth Orbit (LEO - between ~300-1,000km) in the near future as part of a larger international collaborative programme.
