R.Adm. Geoffrey M. Biekro, Chief of Naval Staff of Ghana (lectured by GN Commander Ali Kamal-Deen) briefs MT correspondent Georg Mader about the Ghanaian Navy's major operational challenges. MT: What are the Ghanaian Navy's major operational challenges in today's Gulf of Guinea (GoG)? R.Adm. G. M. Biekro: The GoG provides the economic lifeline, not only to the coastal countries in West Africa but to the landlocked countries as well. More than that, it is of strategic importance to the rest of the world, with energy production on the increase. But increasing insecurity in its waters is or should be of a global concern. Ghana's Navy is responsible for securing the entire EEZ, a vast expanse with about two-thirds the size of the land territory of Ghana, larger than Greece. Maritime domain-awareness in these waters is a must, together with an effective presence at sea to respond to security threats. These are our major operational challenges. Others include the ability to obtain intelligence and we map out a strategy of effective collaboration with our neighbours and international partners for information exchange. We have increased the size of our fleet by four Chinese patrol-vessels and increased presence at sea by more scheduled deployments. And we are currently establishing FOBs (Forward Operating Bases), in order to get improved response-times to vulnerable areas.
