The Argentine Armed Forces were once the most important Armed Forces in Latin America, having, for almost a century, very powerful assets and a high degree of training; with the biggest armoured force in Latin America from WW2 onwards, the most powerful Air Force, with the sole strategic bomber force and the only carrier-borne strike force existent in the region. Since the Malvinas/Falklands conflict in 1982, which marked the only defeat of the Argentine Armed Forces in their history, and more importantly, since democracy returned to the country in December 1983; the Argentine military became the target of accusations for most of the problems of the country. This lead to an attitude against the Armed Forces, lasting for many years, and justifying the budget reduction that started in early 1984.
