The degree to which human behaviour can be assisted by computers, or control of decision-making ceded by the human and devolved to the machine, are critical questions for the human race. Fighter cockpits are, arguably, where these discussions are at their most sharply defined. The move from fourth- to fifth-generation fighters is often thought of as being mostly about high-end, high-cost technologies such as stealth, but in many ways the greatest transformation has been in the role of the human being inside the machine. In a jet such as TORNADO, two crew members were required: one to fly the aircraft, another to use its sensors and weapons. As the replacement for TORNADO in the Royal Air Force, the Eurofighter TYPHOON may not have the sculpted radar-reflective shape of a fifth-generation aircraft, but it has more in common with the F-35 than with TORNADO in one important aspect: a single human being.
