Northern Ireland produces far more milk than it can consume and has developed a strong manufacturing sector to add value to its raw material. At the heart of this manufacturing sector is United Dairy Farmers. The United Dairy Farmers Cooperative was formed in 1995, when the UK government transferred ownership of the Northern Ireland Milk Marketing Board and its processing subsidiary, Dromona Quality Foods, to Northern Ireland dairy farmers who had supplied it with milk. Since then, the Group has developed its business interests through organic growth and a series of acquisitions. In 2001, for example, the Group acquired Dale Farm Dairies from Express Dairies, subsequently merging this business with Dromona Quality Foods to form Dale Farm Limited. Dale Farm now has five processing operations throughout the UK and manufactures and distributes a wide range of dairy products to domestic and international markets.
