Government policies for science, usually incorporating economic and social aims, are increasingly influencing the content and management of university research. This essay discusses the influence of selected science policies on individual researchers And group leaders. Within the limitations of a case study, it argues that policies that steer The content of research have a greater influence on research behaviour, than do policies Related to overall research management. Increasing pressures for compliance with mission- Objectives point to the need for closer discussion between those who make policy decisions, And the wider research community.
