H R is not sexy. That is theconclusion of a group of HRdirectors who have gatheredfor a Penna/The MJ round table.Too often the HR function is seen asprocess driven and the place whereyou go to solve a staff issue but, thedebaters agree, it could be so muchmore.If it is so unsexy, then perhaps itis no surprise that one of our guestsadmits HR was not their first careerchoice. Working in a small teamwithout an HR function, it fell to themwhen they just ‘didn’t duck quicklyenough’. And despite starting a new,senior role later in their career andstating at the interview they were‘more OD than HR’, the first job theywere given was to ‘change the termsand conditions’.
