The year 2016 was characterized by a large decrease in cases submitted as shown in Graph 1 -the lowest number of sighting reports since the 2010-2011 time period. This is in sharp contrast to last year which had the highest number of submitted cases on record. The number of cases submitted in a given year is very different than the number of cases that occur in a given year, which will be discussed next. Sightings for the year 2016 also decreased with 5,678 worldwide reports including 4,317 U.S. reports. These are the lowest numbers of sightings in the U.S. since 2008 and the lowest worldwide since 2010. There was no change in how MUFON collects Internet data or any other known reason for the sudden decrease, other than a pronounced shift by witnesses to use their cell phones to enter sighting reports which is nearly impossible under the current CMS system. This is the primary reason for initiating the mobile CMS project which will address this issue.
