摘要

In darkness without sufficient food or light ...we made a little voyage of 8 weeks ... The ship was vastly overcrowded. Hygienic conditions were simply apalling. No toothbrushes, nor toothpaste, no soap & soft water for a great part of the journey. The suitcases were opened forcefully by soldiers. Many things, sometimes everything were taken out, put into the pocket or thrown overboard. This was how many of the over 2500 passengers, like the diarist Ernst Frohlich, would have experienced the notorious voyage of HMT Dunera from Britain to Australia, between July and September 1940. The world was at war and most of the Dunera's passengers were 'enemy aliens'-German, Austrian and Italian men and boys who had found themselves in Great Britain at the beginning of the Second World War. They ranged in age from 16 to over 60. Many of them were of Jewish heritage and had escaped from Nazi Germany in the 1930s.
