摘要

This statement by Omar Bradley has been my motto since I took command of the Belgian Naval Component in 2006. Indeed, my Navy has been undergoing so many changes since the end of the Cold War that it was high time to develop a long term vision and to translate it into consequent plans for operational engagement, procurement and personnel; It goes without saying that such a vision has to be part of our global national defence strategy which states that our missions are being concentrated in three pillars, namely collective defence, contribution to international stability and homeland defence. Jointness and international cooperation are the rule for the Belgian Armed Forces. Moreover, it goes without saying that the budgetary constraints that strike most of our countries, together with difficult recruiting conditions, constitute the limiting factor.
